[b:2h5gy025]DataLink Source – Quantrix Model File [/b:2h5gy025]- Develop functionality to allow a Quantrix Model file to be used as a DataLink source. This would allow users to establish a DataLink with matrices residing in a separate model file.

[b:2h5gy025]Smart Time Dimension[/b:2h5gy025] – Develop functionality to support nested time dimensions in a model. For instance, the model could know 4 quarters belong to a year, and 3 months belong to a quarter, eliminating the need to write recurrence formulas between time dimensions.

[b:2h5gy025]Presentation Engine[/b:2h5gy025] – Develop functionality that allows users to link in pieces of Quantrix matrices, views and charts onto a single presentation canvas for using, printing, or exporting the model.

[b:2h5gy025]Develop User and Viewer Application[/b:2h5gy025] – Develop a Viewer version of the application that would allow the user to only view the model. Also develop a User version of the application that would allow the user to modify data and structure, but not the model formulas.

[b:2h5gy025]Solver[/b:2h5gy025] – Develop a solver / goalseek module for Quantrix to solve complex models with variable inputs.

[b:2h5gy025]Scripting[/b:2h5gy025] – Develop a scripting language for the application to allow users to customize Quantrix functionality to their needs.

[b:2h5gy025]XBRL Desktop Support[/b:2h5gy025] – Develop integrated support for the eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) ([url:2h5gy025][/url:2h5gy025]) to allow users to import and export XBRL documents.

I joined the community a bit late to vote on this, but, as a new user, I find the lack of smart time dimensions quite puzzling — it means that you have to delve into some quite advanced functionality even for quite simple models. The results lack some of the elegance and simplicity I hoped for.

One request, if you do choose to implement this: it would be important to allow for different definitions of the financial year — e.g. starting in April or July.

One of the most common problems I find with financial modeling is trying to get realistic assumptions (of course if we could predict the future this would not be a problem!). The best program that I know that does this effectively is :Crystalball: (an excel overlay). This software allows the user to define upper and lower limits and the type of statistical distribution to each assumption. The model is then ‘run’ and the final average/median result (eg Profit) is determined – with it’s statistical distribution & sensitivity analysis. I know this is a huge ask, but I believe it would really be a major advantage to quantrix.

I would like to be able to “globally” set model variables to 0 (instead of default: empty). Also, some formulae relate to almost every matrix in my model.

For example I have a model with 14 matrices and 175 formula. Of these 175 formula, 4 get repeated in about 10 matrices:
– Diff = Actual – Budget
– Diff% = (Actual-Budget)/Budget
– Cumulative:Month[1] = Period:Month[1]
– Cumulative = Cumulative:Month[PREV]+Cumulative:Month[THIS]

Hence, the global formula feature would allow for deletion of (10-1)*4=36 formulas.

For the 4 matrices that the 4 formulae do not apply to one would need a possibility to exclude them. Maybe one could “drag” the “global formula container” onto a matrix if it applies to that matrix (similar to the way one can drag a categorie). Then the first line in the formula area of that matrix would read: “global formulas apply”.

Mind you, as I am new to Quantrix it maybe that something for global definitions is available allready and I haven’t discovered it.


I would like to encourage the addition of a yield-to-maturity (YTM) formula to the financial functions. It’s a variant of your rate() formula. YTM is applicable to any debt security, including:
– mortgage annual percentage yield calculation
– CD yield to maturity calculation
– bond yield to maturity calculation; also applies to Treasury securities, commercial paper, etc.

Please vote in favor of adding this feature.

For those interested, the full details for the most general case of the formula are:

* maturity date (e.g. 22-june-2016)
* coupon (interest payment per annual, e.g. 5.5%)
* payment frequency (annual, semi-annual, quarterly, monthly)
* nominal amount (the face value of the debt security/mortgage)
* price paid for debt security (100 is ‘par’); alterantively, one could specify the principal amount (the price paid for the security at purchase)
* accrued interest (the accrued interest paid for the security at purchase)
* purchase date (the purchase date)

When buying/selling a debt security, there’s a principal amount to be paid, defined as price * nominal amount / 100, but then there’s also accrued interest to be paid. If e.g. one buys a security that pays interest yearly one month after interest was paid, the buyer pays off the seller 1 month worth of interest. This keeps the price free of such predictable ‘distortions’.

For someone calculating the annual percentage yield on a CD, mortgage, T-Bill, some of the parameters would not be necessary.


Smart Time Line is definitely a basic feature that should have been implemented since the beginning of Quantrix.

First of all thanks to DavidC for raising the patent issue. I don’t know if such a patent has been filed. But in case there is something out there that keeps Quantrix away from implementing a “Smart Time Line” I know a bunch of Chinese developers who would love to write a Smart Time Line Plugin for Quantrix and sell it for lets say 20 dollars. It will be a funny show for the whole forum, to see how the potential patent holder tries to sew them.

Patents should be worth the paper they are written on.


I think that Quantrix will have difficulty implementing a smart time dimension due to that idea being well protected by a competitor through patents.

Dimensions to be managed like Windows Explorer. They thus write their own roll ups unless changed by the user say from sum to average.
Thus this would make easy drag and drop of hierarchies.

Also allow for hierarchies to be imported by defining GreatGrandParent, GrandParent, Parent, Child relationships. Once setup any revised changes in a table can be imported into the structure and the structure changes immediately.

Simplify formulae making. too complex at present. maybe a module that thinks for you.
