I’m curious how other users are using the new Timeline feature of 5.1. Conceptually I find the [i:13tjusyv]idea[/i:13tjusyv] of timelines very intuitive and have been using it heavily in my models, but the particular way in which I’ve tried to use it (multi-dimension timelines in conjunction with summary items and valueat() functions, using the # operator to calculate offsets) has caused me nothing but frustration. I’ve been in communication with Quantrix support and they understand the shortcomings in their implementation.

I’m curious if any other users out there wiser than myself have actually found any use cases for the timeline feature that are useful and not frustrating to use?

George,
If your timeline has summary items (e.g. sum per month, quarter, year, etc) you will not be able to use the valueat() function properly, since valueat() treats the summary items as just another item in the category instead of skipping it. I reported this error earlier this year and as of 5.1.2 it still exists.

Thanks Mike. Worked like a charm and more direct than I thought…I was over complicating it.

Question: are there any restrictions/practices I should be aware of when using select statements with matrices that have timelines? They are categories but they are special..

any pointers would be helpful.

Thanks again,
George

[quote="Georgecp":mg36xxsk]Hi Mike,

I am trying to use timelines in a model..so far so good for monthly calculations..

My issue: I used months (Jan, Feb, etc.) so I had to use groups for quarters. I cannot select the quarter group names for summary totals. I have tried my old v4.x time rollup matrix with date keys and using as but I haven’t gotten it to work yet..Do you have a suggestion as to an approach I can use?

Thanks,
George[/quote:mg36xxsk]

Hi – I would recommend creating a separate summary matrix with a rollup for quarters. Timeline categories are aware of each other so you can simply do a sum of the month matrix to get the quarterly numbers. Attached is an example.

Hi – thanks for posting and for your feedback on timeline. I would love to hear how others are (or can’t) use timeline as it is immensely helpful for future release planning.

Hi:

One of the serious limitations of the Timeline Feature as implemented in v5.1, is the inability to contain groups in the Timeline. Since my work entails extensive references to earlier years grouped as Actuals, Current Year Estimates grouped as Estimated and Future Projections grouped as Projected, I continue to use version 4 for all my projects.
